Industrial Decarbonisation

Focusing on improving energy and carbon efficiency, we advise our public and private sector clients on how to reduce emissions in energy intensive industries through the development and deployment of new technology, making more efficient use of energy systems and decarbonising supply chains.

Our clients include government agencies, local authorities, energy and mineral exploration and development companies, engineering and construction companies (EPCs) and technology R&D consortiums.

Our consulting frames industrial decarbonisation within the context of specific operating environments, technology, project economics, market risks and barriers, the regulatory environment and project financing.

Strategy: we help our asset operating clients select the right decarbonisation technologies from the portfolio of developing options. For technology developers we identify addressable market opportunities. We provide modelling on decarbonisation technology deployment and uptake at regional and national level.

ESG & Sustainability: we develop programmes and actions to tap into a company's potential and build a new, sustainable business ecosystem.

Decarbonisation Roadmapping: we specialise in identifying and prioritising decarbonisation options - developing time, cost and emission reduction pathways that incorporate innovation and new technology.

Low-Carbon Technologies and Infrastructure: we provide technical and commercial advice on emerging low-carbon technologies and infrastructure - for example, integrating battery and hydrogen technologies into existing energy systems.

Technology Landscape and Deep-Dive: whether it is technology creation at an early stage or technology diffusion in a commercialisation context, we perform technology scouting, technical due diligence and competitive & opportunity analysis to facilitate our clients' investment decision or M&A strategy.

Project Operational Support: we provide project management, operational roadmap development, feasibility studies and techno-economic analysis of pilot and demonstration projects.

Technology Commercialisation: we support technology commercialisation through developing pilot programmes, supporting market entry and developing commercial strategies. We find aligned clients for novel decarbonisation technologies.

Collaborative Partnerships: we foster cooperation by creating project or technology development partnerships and joint ventures for technology demonstration and commercialisation.

Renewable Investment Portfolio for the Energy Business Unit of $20Bn

The client wanted to diversify the business at a portfolio level to include non-hydrocarbon energy.

We investigated and analysed a set of sources of renewable energy generation, storage and distribution, and identified an investment strategy and philosophy aligned with the client’s corporate strategy. We identified potential targets and developed integration strategies across other international business units.

Commercialise a Zero-Waste Circular Economy Process Technology

Currently working with a consortium client to commercialise a zero-waste circular economy process technology based on an inexpensive inorganic ionic liquid system that converts organic wastes into high-value products (e.g. H2, solid carbon and a range of intermediate products).

The work includes technology testing, developing the competitor landscape and creating investor communication material - as well as providing interim management to the consortium.

R&D Consortium - The Netherlands

Hydrogen Carriers: Technology Options and Business Concept

We evaluated three options for storing and transporting hydrogen: ammonia, formic acid and liquid methylcyclohexane (MCH). Our work included comparative analysis of technical & infrastructure requirements, costs, and supply chain maturity.

An initial business concept, with capability mapping and gap analysis, was developed and tested with the management team based on the most attractive concept identified.

Feasibility and Impact of Emerging Subsurface Energy Storage

This research project investigated several emerging subsurface energy storage technologies including ground source heating and cooling, mine water geothermal, compressed air energy storage, hydrogen storage and underground pumped hydropower storage.

The project was focused on the technical requirements and maturity, technology feasibility in the UK’s onshore geology and the predicted environmental impact.
